On Saturday night I went to see Superman Returns and was really impressed. I’ve never been a huge fan of Superman because as a hero, he seems a bit dicky (and the fact that no one has ever been able to notice the similarity between Superman and Clarke Kent has always irked me). But other than those two minor points – the movie was very well done and I really liked it.
Whenever I think of Superman movies I always think back to a story my father told me. When he was younger he went to see one of the original Superman movies and came away a little disappointed. When he was telling his work-mates about it they asked him:
“Did he save everyone that was in trouble?”
“Did he fly over buildings?”
“Was he faster than a speeding bullet?”
“Could he deflect bullets and bend steel bars with his bare hands?”
And the answer that Dad had to give was “Yes” because that’s what the movie was all about. So this made my father realise that there wasn’t really anything wrong with the movie – it just wasn’t his particular “cup of tea”.
I think that the above story should be told to all movie critics as far too often they will judge a movie particularly harshly – if a movie is a B-Grade horror, then treat it like that – don’t go comparing it to a Shakespearean play!
Anyways… before I go too far off topic – Go see Superman Returns because it’s really good!
On Sunday afternoon we went to see Over The Hedge and it was also very good. Dreamworks have been trying hard incredibly hard to match Pixar’s success and if they keep making movies like Shrek, Madagascar and Over The Hedge, they’ve got an excellent chance.
